Dorothea June Shelton

Dorothea June Shelton, a former resident of Alvord, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer. She was known as Kandy to family and friends. Kandy was born in Loch Haven, Pa., Tuesday, July 23, 1946, to Chalmer (Bob) and Earlene Toner, formerly Earlene Brown.

The Toners raised Kandy in Holliday after returning to Texas Electric. After high school, Kandy attended Texas Woman’s University before beginning her career with Southwestern Bell. She briefly worked for other communications companies, but ultimately retired from Southwestern Bell, where she made many lifelong friends.

Kandy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Kenneth Shelton of Hot Springs Village, Ark. They shared a love of travel to Isla Mujeres, Mexico, winning any game involving a wager and ending their day at “tea time” with wine, snacks and a good country tune.

Kenny and Kandy were active in the Alvord First Methodist Church, Alvord Booster Club and local Democratic politics. Kandy had a close group of friends with whom she enjoyed wine, an occasional concert and playing many games of canasta.

Kenny and Kandy raised four children, Amanda Brown, married to Kevin Brown of Bastrop, Marni Chancellor, married to Scott Chancellor of Athens, Matt Shelton, married to Sarah Frahm of Pacific Grove, Calif. and Karey Allen, married to Cliff Allen of Grapevine. She loved nothing more than her 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Her love for the outdoors drew her to Hot Springs Village, Ark. Where she made many new friends in the Unitarian Universalist Church, Master Gardeners, Liberal Ladies, and HSV Democrats.

Kandy was predeceased in death by her parents; and her brother, Ralph (Bo) Toner.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022, at the Unitarian Universalist Village church, 403 Barcelona Road, Hot Springs Village, Ark., 71909.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Arkansas Hospice or your local hospice organization.
