Joyce N. Robinson Smith came into the world March 29, 1926 and left us on May 17, 2023 at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Bert H. Smith; father, Gabriel F. Robinson; mother, Rosalie Powell Robinson; son-in –law, Rev. Edward J. Holt; grandson, Richard R. Holt; and great-great grandchild, Jacey Ann Monson.
Joyce is survived by daughter, Linda Holt-Monson (Bill) of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; son, Jerry D. Smith (Gail Ferguson) of Hoover, Alabama; grandchildren James E. Holt of Collinsville, Illinois, Matthew S. Smith (Kimberly Ball) of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Justin D. Smith (Ashley McDougald) of San Francisco, California, Abigail H. Merkl (John) of Columbiana, Alabama, Bruce Monson (Wonder) and Bonnie Cors (Steve). Joyce was blessed with fourteen great- grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was affectionately known by all her “grands” as Mama Joyce.
Joyce graduated from Bastrop High School where she was crowned Homecoming Queen her senior year. After meeting the love of her life, Bert (Smitty) in Natchitoches, Louisiana during World War II, they married. She spent the next twenty years as a naval aviator’s wife raising their two children. After Bert’s retirement, they settled in Joyce’s hometown of Bastrop, Louisiana where they joined Christ Episcopal Church. She served as church secretary for 25 wonderful years until she retired in 1986. Joyce was involved with the altar guild, Episcopal Church Women (ECW) and Cursillo. She loved the liturgy, the music, the worship and the family feeling she felt at Christ Church and had many great memories with many close and endearing friends.
In 2007, Joyce and Bert moved to Hot Springs Village, Arkansas to live with their daughter, Linda. She attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where she made many good friends.
A memorial service will be helped Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 2pm at Christ Episcopal Church in Bastrop, Louisiana with a visitation beginning at 1pm.
This date would have been she and Bert’s 79th wedding anniversary. She will be placed next to Bert in the Christ Church Cemetery.
