Darrell Mangum, age 72, passed away on October 13, 2026 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Darrell was a beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, whose life was defined by his faith in God, his devotion to family, his unending desire for learning, and his generous spirit.
Born in 1953 in Dallas, Texas to Joyce and Gordon Mangum, Darrell grew up in Dallas before eventually making his home in Duncanville. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong commitment to academic achievement, graduating near the top of his high school class. He was also very gifted socially, meeting people with ease and creating long lasting friendships and relationships in the process.
Following high school, Darrell attended college, initially studying physics and ending up finishing with a pharmacy degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Darrell dedicated his professional life to pharmacy, using his knowledge and skills to help others. He worked at several establishments over the course of his career, including Revco, Cigna, and Tom Thumb Pharmacy, amongst others.
One fateful day in 1980, Darrell was encouraged by his friend Chris to join in on a double date. Chris’ wife Cindy wanted Darrell to meet her co-worker, a young woman by the name of Melinda. As luck would have it, the double date went well and set in motion a partnership that would last for nearly five decades. After three years of getting to know one another and making fond memories in the process, Darrell proposed that they join hands in marriage, and the rest is history.
One of the most meaningful expressions of Darrell’s faith was his service alongside his wife, Melinda. They taught Sunday School together, sharing their faith, teaching God’s word, and investing in the lives of others. Darrell also sang in the choir, sharing one of his many talents through music and singing. For many years, Darrell served the church as a deacon. Throughout their years at First Baptist Oak Cliff and The Oaks Baptist Church, Darrell and Melinda built lasting relationships and touched many lives.
Anyone who knew Darrell will recall his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh. He was also known for his wisdom and advice. Whether someone needed guidance, a listening ear, or a little perspective, Darrell could always be counted on to provide thoughtful counsel whenever needed.
Outside of work and church, Darrell enjoyed gardening, reading, theater, and music. He especially loved attending plays and concerts. He also had a special place in his heart for animals, sharing a bond with and caring for several animal companions over the course of his life.
Above all, Darrell treasured his family. He had the privilege of sharing 46 years of love and adventure with his wife Melinda, including 43 years of marriage. Together, they raised their two children, Brett and Brandy, who were among his greatest blessings. He was also a proud and loving grandfather to Erin, Emma, and Ava, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, Joyce and Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Melinda; son Brett (Leon); daughter Brandy Moore (Alex); granddaughters, Erin, Emma, and Ava Moore; and brother Mike (Allison); niece Katie; nephew David; as well as numerous cousins and extended family.
Darrell’s legacy and spirit will continue on through all the lives he encountered and the positive change that he created. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
