John Wright Shropshire, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and rhythm guitarist for the 1960s Austin rock band The Spades, played his final notes and stepped gracefully offstage on June 5, 2026, at the age of 77.

Known for his warm, cheery smile, kind words, and natural gift for harmony, John lived life with genuine gusto and an upbeat rhythm. Whether he was chasing birdies on the golf course, sharpening his aim at the shooting range with the spirit of a true outdoorsman, or lighting up Thursday karaoke nights with his enthusiastic vocals, John brought energy, joy, and a quest for that perfect moment to everything he did.

A proud member of The Spades in mid-1960s Austin, he helped fill local dance halls with raw, energetic rock ‘n’ roll during the city’s early music scene. Those years left him with a lifelong love of music that never faded.

John was preceded offstage by his father, Wallace Wells Shropshire; his mother, Doris Peterson Shropshire; his sister, Cheryl Lynn Landers; and his nephew, Darrell Wayne Landers.

He is remembered by the great love of his life and harmony partner of 38 years, Connie Bishop Shropshire; his eldest daughter, Shannon Anderson; his youngest daughter, Amy Grizzaffi, and her husband Chris; grandson Anthony Grizzaffi; and granddaughter Rebeccah Grizzaffi. His family will forever cherish the sweet melodies he brought into their lives.

John lived his life like a well-crafted song — soulful, full of heart, with room for improvisation and plenty of love in every refrain. He taught those around him to play loud when it matters, stay in tune with the people they love, and never fear the bridge.

We’ll miss your steady rhythm and warm voice, John. Save us a spot in the band — we’ll join you for the encore.
